In 2020-2021, I led the implementation and launch of Canada Learning Code’s (CLC) new Brightspace learning management system (LMS). This platform unified all our existing content into a single, user-friendly space, while also providing room for experimenting with innovative eLearning approaches for the first time as an organization. In my role as Learning Experience Designer, I handled the design of the back-end organizational structure, the overall platform appearance, and the creation of course materials. This article will mostly delve into the specifics of platform design.

Approach

Since we opted for Brightspace, an off-the-shelf solution, I had to tailor the user interface extensively to fit our distinct requirements. First, I designed wireframes for each page in Figma and any visual assets in Canva. I then built branded widgets and content templates using HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. Throughout the soft and hard launch phases, I worked closely with a UX/UI specialist, analyzing learner engagement data and gathering qualitative feedback. This iterative process aimed to progressively enhance the learner experience on the LMS.

Results

In its final iteration, the platform housed asynchronous content that was organized into 3 main sections:

  • Lounge: A place for educators across Canada to network and build relationships, ask questions, and share resources.
  • Asynchronous Courses: A growing catalogue of 8 brand new courses that provided professional development and training for educators incorporating computer science into their daily practice.
  • Lesson Plans: A collection of over 100 lesson plans educators could use to introduce coding to their students.

Data indicated that previous designs posed navigation challenges, particularly when compared to our custom webpage. Introducing three main areas highlighted in a fixed navigation bar enabled educators to log in and promptly locate the specific support they needed.

One year post-launch, we had enrolled 4220 learners on the platform. We continued building and hosting new learning experiences, such as our national educator conference (TeacherCon) and blended courses like Teachers Learning Code Foundations.
